What is a Character TD? This one started out something like this…

Throughout his life Ryan Trowbridge had two main passions, art and
technology. Growing up in the rainy state of Washington he spent many
days indoors which included a healthy dose of video games. At fourteen
he had already decided on a college to further his passions. In 1999
he attended Digipen Institute of Technology located in Redmond
Washington. With a few new skill sets under his belt he landed his
first job as a texture artist for Pipeworks Software in yet another
rainy state, Oregon. He ended up staying at Pipeworks for six years.
His position quickly changed from texture artist to environment artist
and then finally settled into the position of modeling, rigging, and
animating characters. While in Oregon he was lucky to meet his
beautiful wife Brenda.
After six years of working at Pipeworks, a great opportunity came up
to work as a Character TD for NaughtyDog Inc in sunny California. He
was very excited to set up many of the characters for Uncharted Drakes
Fortune. It seemed like there was no way to top such an amazing
project. That was until starting work on the characters for the most
highly reviewed and awarded game of 2009, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.
To date Uncharted 2 has received 98 Game of the Year awards.

Hanno Hagedorn is a lead character artist at Naughty Dog. He has extensive experience working on games from many different studios and production environments. Before working as a senior character artist on Uncharted 2: Drake’s Fortune, Hanno was a Lead Character Artist on the critically acclaimed– AAA title –Crysis. During this year’s conference, Hanno will be demonstrating the full workflow of the character creation process; from beginning to end. This means a detail breakdown of his personal processes, and how he really goes about creating all the compelling characters, he is so well known for. Additionally, Hanno will also cover general reference gathering procedures, modeling & texturing techniques, and Zbrush normal-map extraction operations.

Born and raised on the Big Island of Hawaii, Kekai Kotaki has always had a passion for art. Finding the sunshine and beautiful scenery distracting, he moved to dreary Seattle in 2000 to attend art school. After graduating, he proceeded to attempt a career at doing art. This meant getting a job at ArenaNet, the makers of the Guild Wars franchise, as a lowly texture artist. Through hard work and more than a little luck he was able to become a concept artist.

Kekai can still be found in Seattle at ArenaNet. He is working hard as Lead Concept Artist on Guild Wars 2 and on a burgeoning illustration career. Kekai will be presenting a 3 hour workshop focusing primarily on Character Illustration and environment design.

We are pleased to announce that the second annual EvolveCG Conference will be held at the Hilton Marina in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida on May 15-16. This will be a two day event filled with workshops, job fairs, an awards show and much, much more.

EvolveCG was specifically created to help students in areas with low-to-zero animation industry presence or access, the opportunity to both learn and observe from some of the best Computer Graphic, and Visual Effects Artist in the world. This event is designed by professionals to provide a purely educational experience for both students and professionals alike.

EvolveCG has an amazing line up of presenters covering all of the different major disciplines of Computer Animation. Everything from: Character Design/Creation and Feature Animation, to Technical Rigging and Virtual Set Creation for Films & Games. These subjects, and many more, will be broken up into eight – three hour long workshops detailing the production process of the various disciplines.

Additionally, EvolveCG is also excited to be bringing back our Critique Corner; which is a one of a kind opportunity for artist to have a one-on-one sit down with an industry professional of their choice. These professional artists will review your portfolio while providing you with direct and insightful feedback. We will also be expanding our job fair with more game studios and film company selections.

On top of this, EvovleCG will be incorporating a gallery for our first ever challenge; “The Hunter”. Attendees will be able to view all wining submissions from the challenge, as well as an awards ceremony to announce the Grand Prize winners from the competition catagories.

The Critique Corner is a custom per review service provided on a first come-first served basis. Artist be able to submit samples from their body of work (i.e. demo-reels, resumes, portfolios, etc.) to be reviewed by supervisors from various production studios; via actual one-on-one sessions. During this time, students will be offered key insights into what their various strengths and weaknesses, while simultaneously being equipping with the tools necessary and direction to ultimately choose the right career path for them. As such, and because of the limited time frame we ask participants only show their best work and limit their reels to two minutes. All video should be submitted in a QuickTime video format, on PC compatible DVD/S, CD/s, or Hard drives.

Taking into consideration the amazing talent among students, we have decided to create an exciting CG Art Contest. The Hunter challenge asks participants to study and create the ultimate Hunter character/scenario.

The challenge will be open to all students currently enrolled in any computer graphic art or animation program (at any college or animation school), or who has graduated within seven months of entering this challenge.
